Gotta tell you— we love this weapon-mounted light (WML).
The Streamlight TLR-1 has been a duty staple for years, and NG’s view is blunt: if you don’t run a WML on your duty gun, you’re wrong. Light is the patrol game-changer— if you can’t see a threat, or identify it, you’re already behind.
 
So the real questions are which light, what features, and what value. We’ve used TLRs on patrol, in countless low-light courses, and at home. Like many, we started with the standard TLR, graduated to the HL, and now run the HL-X. All were—and still are—solid choices, but the HL-X shines (too easy) thanks to its updated power and features.
 
Front-loading batteries are the headline upgrade. If you’ve wrestled with earlier models, you instantly get it—speed reloads for your light. The body geometry is refined, too; Streamlight is clearly trimming radar signature with beveled edges and a sleeker, still-bombproof housing.
 
Output is up to 1,500 lumens with the SL-B9® rechargeable and 1,000 lumens on CR-123s in a pinch, pushing 20,000 candela. Lumen-vs-candela debates will rage forever, but NG plays in the real world: at patrol distances we’d rather drown a suspect in bright flood than run a rifle-tight hotspot.
 
Best feature? The extra high-profile switches. Unless you’ve got mondo mitts, being able to toggle without breaking a master grip is priceless. Switchology is why we keep coming back to Streamlight: after side-by-side low-light courses, we found most big names are “within the noise” on beam quality— ergonomics decide the winner. The HL-X still gives you momentary and constant-on, and the price-to-performance ratio embarrasses the competition. Forget spec-sheet flexing; worry about street performance.
