Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “Big Sarge” - but you’ve never been given its definition. We can help with that – and we can give a perfect explanation of what that phrase really means.
Last night, the legend, the man himself, “Big Sarge”—or if you were lucky enough; Scott—hung up his hat, and the whole fucking squad turned out. Why? Because Scott was the kind of leader who didn’t give a shit about climbing the food chain—he cared about his people. He didn’t sweat the small stuff, he understood what it means to be a ground pounder, and he always put the boys first. Scott is fucking metal. That’s why he’s walking out a legend, and that’s why the politicians who never showed up can sit in their empty offices wondering why no one cares when they leave. Pray you know a Scott in your career.
From the Trenches, Not the Tower: Culture Is Built in the Mud
We’re not waiting around for some top-level manager messiah to bless us with better culture. This is a common concept present in massive departments, “We just need a good one to get to the top and change it all.” It’s an illusion. An ineffective falsehood that surrenders the hope and vision of a day where Officers on the ground are truly embraced, effective, and unshackled to make actual impact on their surroundings. It is a barrier to the true golden era of law enforcement. Understand one thing: We’re making it ourselves, right here, right now. Nonexus Group isn’t about waiting for permission. We’re about rolling up our sleeves and fighting the cultural war from the ground up. Because the reality is, culture isn’t some policy on a piece of paper. It’s the way you treat the rookie on his first night shift, the way you back each other up, and the way you don’t let the petty stuff get in the way of the real mission.
What Works Wins: This Is the NG Way
Scott lived it. We believe it. What works wins. It’s not about bloated rules that do nothing but make officers more vulnerable. It’s about serving the public and having each other’s backs. It’s about making the good stops, not just racking up stats, and about staying aggressive for the right reasons. We’re not here to play nice with useless policies; we’re here to make sure that what actually works on the street is what guides us.
No Waiting, Just Doing
So, here’s to Scott, and here’s to every officer who knows that good leadership isn’t about a rank, it’s about how you lead from the front. And understanding that’s not an empty phrase, or the bastardized interpretation of it. It shouldn’t be a phrase you hollowly answer with when you’re asked what good leadership means in your promotional interview. It’s an action, not a line of text you picked up in a training course. Get off your ass. If you want the boys to do more, go do it yourself. Yes. It is that simple. The boys will work as hard as they can if they want to work for you, not because of you. Stay true to the roots and remember who the backbone is. Don’t be a coward, don’t be selfish, and remember the mission. And if you’re a person who’s in charge of people reading this and getting all hot under the collar - you’re the problem. If this offends you, it’s because you’re exactly the kind of top-down, selfish leader who’ll have an empty retirement party. There’s a reason no one shows up for you—because you never showed up for them. Scott? He was out there till the very end, making the stops, being in the fight with his team. That’s what it’s about.
And one last note to leaders: if you’re listening, here’s the truth—if you’re all about statistics, remember this: when you trust your people, the stats will follow. Your officers already have your trust to carry a gun. Give them the trust to make smart, forward-leaning decisions. If that made you roll your eyes, reevaluate yourself. Let that phrase sink in, actually think about it. When there’s something to correct, don’t use a shotgun when you need a scalpel. Let the champions run, and the good work will follow. Everything else falls into place when your people are motivated and trusted to do what they do best. Let the big dogs run, don't make them stay on the porch.
Keep it real and keep it grounded. No excuses. What works wins, and we’ll build that culture from the ground up—just like our Sergeant Scott did.
Beat the ever-loving shit out of the beat – for the boys.
To the Legend,
The NG

This is wonderfully and perfectly written.
